There is a fan above Joe's head. -----> O
There is a fan on Joe's head. --------> X

容易混淆介系詞“on“和“above“，這兩個介系詞都用來表示《地點》和《方向》，都指“在上面“，但on指一種東西直接在另一種東西的表面之上，而above則指一種東西隔著空間懸於另一種東西的上方，並不是直接在該東西的上面。

除了on和above之外，也可用“opposite 對面“、“between 在中間“、“next to 在旁邊“、“near 在附近“、“below 在下方/低於“、“under 在下面“等介系詞來表示地點和方向，使用時要留意各種介系詞所表示的確切方位。

below the hill 在山丘下面
above Ken 在Ken的上方
on Ken's head 在Ken的頭頂上
next to Ken 在Ken的旁邊
near Ken 在Ken的附近
opposite Ken 在Ken的對面
between the telephone booth and the garbage can 在電話亭和垃圾桶的中間
under the bench 在長凳下面
