過去進行式指"was/were"加現在分詞的時態，通常與一般過去式連用，以對比兩個過去的行為的時間長短和發生時間。一般來說，當一件過去的事情正在進行時，另一件事情在中途發生，那麼正在進行的事情便要用過去進行式，而中途發生的事情則須用一般過去式。
《當Judy來的時候，我正在看電視。》〈看電視〉的動作是一直在過去進行著的，時間比較長，需用過去進行式來表示；〈來到〉這個動作則是中途發生的，時間比較短，需用一般過去式來表示。
Peter was doing his homework when Tom phoned.
While I was sleeping, Mom went out.
Johnny came as we were studying.
David saw a monkey when he was playing on the swing.
