要特別指明“這/那“或“這些/那些“的已知或已提過的東西時，需要在東西之前加上《定冠詞》“the“。
“the“也可以用在下列情況：
Δ獨一無二的東西之前，如：“the sun“太陽、“the sky“天空
Δ一些建築物、書本、河流、海洋、島嶼、山脈或地方名稱的之前，如：“the Thames“泰晤士河、“the United States of America“美國
Δ省去名詞的形容詞之前，如：“the rich and the poor“有錢人和窮人
Δ最高級形容詞之前，如：“Elephants are the largest mammals on land“大象是陸地上最大的哺乳類動物
Δ全寫的日期之前，如：“the first of January“一月一日
注意有些情況是不能用““的，如：人名、抽象名詞（death 死亡）、餐膳名稱（for breakfast 作為早餐）、體育運動（play soccer 踢足球）、季節（in summer 在夏天）、時間（at seven 在七點）。
at home 在家中 、 in bed 在床上 、 watch TV 看電視
at night 在晚上 、 go to school/work/church 上學/上班/上教堂
at school 上課 、 play chess 下棋
