Δ 英文正確用法指引(二) - 40 形容詞的比較級(1)

Dan is fatter than Kate. ---------> O
Dan is fater than Kate. ----------> X

要比較兩種事物時，一般會在形容詞的字尾加上“er“來構成比較級；而要比較三種或以上的事物時，則會在形容詞的字尾加上“est“來構成最高級。不過，有些形容詞的比較級和最高級卻不可以只加上er和est來構成，而是要做出另一些改變，如：fat不行只加上er，還要重複字尾“t“再加上“er“。

Δ 形容詞字尾的字母是子音，而該子音之前又是單一個母音，那麼必須重複字尾的字母一次，才加“er“或“est“。
big -> bigger -> biggest 大的
Pam's apple is bigger than mine.

Δ 形容詞的字尾是“y“時，一般來說是刪去“y“，再加“ier“或“iest“。
heavy -> heavier -> heaviest 重的
Jack's bag is the heaviest.

Δ 形容詞的字尾是單一個“e“，只需加上“r“或“st“。
ripe -> riper -> ripest 成熟的
This peach is riper than that one on the table.
